Cornwall Croquet Club's B League team got off to its usual slow start at home against Plymouth in their last match of the league season.
With two debutants in the team, the lunchtime score was 3-0 to Plymouth.
The afternoon singles saw Cornwall mount a serious fight back, as in the previous match against Sidmouth. David Edwards pegged out to win his match in confident style, followed by a solid victory for John Dowding.
Could a miracle win be on the cards? Unfortunately, it wasn't to be.
Illness prevented rookie Jenny Burrows from completing her match and she was behind at the time. Finally, Stephen Read, having manouvered one ball all the way to the peg in quick time, saw his opponent claw his way back into the game and eventually win by just a single point.
The Club's record of one victory
from five matches, in its inaugural season, has been less important
than providing development opportunities for the Club's less experienced
players, of whom ten have been used in the matches. It's been a good start
to many competitive careers!
Final Score: Plymouth 5 Cornwall 2
L to R:- John Roberts (Plymouth), Jenny Burrows (Cornwall), Brian Waterson
Brian Stephens (Plymouth), Christine Shepherd (Plymouth).
Front row:- David Edwards (Cornwall), Stephen Read (Cornwall), John Dowding (Cornwall).
