Croquet News

A team of six players from Nailsea played a friendly match with Fowey on the afternoon of Monday 15 th May, the event comprised of 4 games, 2 doubles and 2 singles. The more experienced Nailsea team won 3:1, however a very enjoyable afternoon was had by one and all, following a sandwich lunch at Rosemary's house.

The mist cleared during the afternoon and allowed our visitors to see the beautiful setting for our small court on the Lower Tea Garden at the Fowey Hotel. We all enjoyed our delicious cream tea provided by the Fowey Hotel, and appreciated the cheering on by the enthusiastic crowd on the hotel's balconies! The lawn was mowed twice and set out for this event by Tony Jennings, our thanks to him for helping in this way.

Nailsea was represented by Violet and Richard Delmas, Brigit Clayton, Mary Barnes, Kathy Wallace and Linda Shaw. Barry and David Edwards, Tony Jennings and Rosemary Bradshaw played for Fowey. The Nailsea side continue their tour with a visit to Cornwall at Porthpean and also to a private lawn at Budock Vean.

The Committee are very pleased that Tim Rodes (who looks after the garden for the Fowey Hotel), has agreed to cut the grass for us, using our cylinder mower, on a regular basis. He has already applied moss killer and fertiliser so there will be some brown patches for a while. We are hoping it will be possible to scarify as well. We look forward to many happy games in the coming summer, and welcome our new members Dawn Powell, Geoff Bowden and Francesca Danu.

The Social Scene

Don't forget that our social functions next month begin on Monday 12thJune at 4.00pm with a Strawberry Cream Tea at Myrtle Cottage (Janet Howard's house). If you play a game of croquet prior to tea this provides a relaxing half-hour to discuss the game, alternatively, if you are a social member it can be a time to catch-up on the latest croquet news. For avid players there will also be time to play a game in the early evening.

Wednesday 21 st June is an all day friendly match with Cornwall. Players and spectators are invited to join Porthpean for their Mid-summer Party. Refer to your Membership Information Programme 2006/07 for details.

On Monday 17 thJuly our Summer Party takes place at the home of Gwen Cussans. There is a nominal charge of £1.00 but please contact the Social Secretaries, Sylvia and Janet, for more details and food contributions.

A time for thought! On Monday 21st August Croquet will again take place at Pencarrow House. The cost is

£5.00 per playing member - please contact Janet Howard for details. If you are not playing why not just visit the House and be a croquet supporter!
