Croquet News

The Season begins on Monday, 24 April, weather permitting. The Fowey Hotel are generously allowing us to use the lower Tea Garden and while most members will still wish to play on Mondays we can also play at other times. The exception to this is when the Hotel starts using the lawn for Teas, then we will be confined to mornings until 12 noon, and evenings after 6.00 pm. The key to the equipment shed can be obtained from reception, and the Committee is hoping that members will make their own arrangements to play. If things get too crowded we may need to start a booking system! As we will be very visible on the Tea Lawn it would be nice, as far as possible, to wear white, ivory, or very 'light' coloured clothes.

You may know that Reg Wapling has retired as Secretary and he will be greatly missed at Committee Meetings. We all thank him for his work for the Club. Reg is kindly continuing to generously give his time in helping with the technical side of setting up the lawn, and with Stephen Read, John Anson and George Cussans forming a lawn/grass group, this will be a strong ground team. We are all getting older, but in our prominent position, based in the grounds of the Fowey Hotel we may attract some younger members to help to keep Croquet alive in this corner of Cornwall.

Matches

A group of six players from Nailsea Croquet Club have asked to visit us on Monday, 15 May, so we need between 3 and 6 players to give them a game. This will be in two sessions 2.00 - 3.30 p.m. followed by tea, and than a second session from 4.00 - 5.30p.m. They know that we are a small Club with limited experience, but they are most anxious to play in Fowey which must be one of the most beautiful locations for a Croquet Club in the country. For details please contact Rosemary. Wednesday, 21 June - All day friendly match with Cornwall Croquet Club at Porthpean. Team of 4 players- take your own lunch and supporters welcome, all of whom are invited to stay for Cornwall's Midsummer Party that evening. Please ask Rosemary for details nearer the date.

Finally, a warm welcome to Marlene Bowden who has kindly taken over from Reg as Secretary: Sylvia and Janet are planning another interesting Social Programme with one or two subtle innovations. Lets hope for a great season with lots of good Croquet weather.

Summer and Winter Social Events

An exciting programme of social events are underway for the Summer and Winter months. These are some dates for your diary.

Strawberry Cream Tea, Monday 12 June: 4.00pm at Myrtle House (Janet Howard's House).

Strawberry jam, scones, fresh strawberries and cream, and a cuppa - the cost £4.00 per head. Members who attended last year will remember the delicious Strawberry teas served in an idyllic garden. This is planned for 4.00 pm. so a game of croquet can be played before tea. If attending, please remember to return the attached reply slip.

Summer Party: 17 July at 6.00 pm

This will be held at Gwen and George Cussan's house 49, The Esplanade. There will be a nominal charge of £1.00 which will go towards Fowey Croquet Club funds. Please bring food contributions, but liaise with Sylvia - tel. 834839. We ask you to pay for your drinks and have a fun evening.

Croquet: Pencarrow House, 21 August at 2.00pm

This is an afternoon visit, date, time and cost (probably £5.00) to be confirmed. Tea available at the cafe.

A Safari Night: 30 Oct 2006

This promises to be different! The supper will begin at Rosemary's House, 11 Troy Court and from there attendees will move to Myrtle House for the second course. The final part of the supper will be at Gwen Cussan's home, The Buoy, 49 The Esplanade.

Christmas Party: 15 Dec - Fowey Hotel

Following the success of last year's Christmas party, Sylvia has booked the Fowey Hotel for this year's celebration. This is always popular so do book early to avoid disappointment.

Chuffers 17 Feb 2007

The final social function for 2006-2007 is dinner at Chuffers. We hope that most members will join us for this evening - the last supper there was very good and there was the added bonus of member entertainment.
