Cornwall Croquet Club's two golf croquet teams met for their first match of the 2016 season on 6 May at the teams' home ground in St Austell. This year's hosts (Home team) were Porthpean.
Both teams fielded eight players including a player each who had not participated at league level before. For Porthpean handicaps ranged from11-5 and for Rosevear ranged from 9-4.
The day started with four doubles games. In her debut match Felicity Owen partnered Kathleen Moorshead and secured a 5-4 win for Porthpean. This was followed by a 7-4 victory for Janet Bell and Trevor Bainbridge before Rosevear's partnership of Dorianne Forsdick and Liz Honey won their game 7-6. This inspired team-mates Peter Dexter and Elizabeth Schofield to secure Rosevear's second doubles win with a 4-3 triumph.
The day continued with the singles games in which neither team allowed the other to forge ahead. Most players from both teams enjoyed at least one win over their opponents. For Rosevear Tanis Boxall won both her singles games 7-5 and for Porthpean Kathryn Smith won both her's 7-6. However, the title of Man of the Match must go to John Clements who, making his debut at league level, stormed through with a hat-trick of convincing wins all within time. After the match his handicap fell from 7 to 6.
The final score was 10.5 to 9.5 in Rosevear's favour.
A healthy, competitive spirit had prevailed but on Club Afternoon a couple of days later former rivals joined forces to take on fresh opponents in friendly games.
