Sickness and handicap changes have left the Intermediate team with a shortage of players, and the match against East Dorset had to be played with only three players, including one above the designated handicap range. There was a cold North wind blowing at the club all morning, but the lawns were dry and getting faster as the morning games got started.
Stephen Read and Ron George won their doubles game in a slow-scoring encounter, by 11 to 7. On the other lawn, Paul Schofield got well ahead of his opponent and looked to be heading for a second win for Cornwall when time was called. However, he was pipped at the post when John Pollard made a good break in his final turn and Paul lost by 15 to 17.
So, all square at lunch and three games to play in the afternoon. A lunch of pasties, followed by strawberries and cream, fortified the home team and resulted in three wins in the afternoon and an overall result of 4 games to one.
The afternoon results were Paul (11) 18, Alan Jones (14) 16; Stephen (14) 23, Hannes Hamann (14) 14 ; Ron (18) 26, John Pollard (9) 4.
Ron pegged out with less than a minute to spare and changed his handicap to 16.
