Six members, new to the club this season, assembled for their first taste of tournament competition on equal terms. Organised so that they each played 3 games during the afternoon, they showed their skills and competitive play from the start. One or two surprised themselves in the first games, and others developed as the other games proceeded.
As the last game started, Sue Daw and Jean Ford each had two wins. Had each won their final games, Ron & David would have had a head-scratching problem to sort out the winner, as they did not play each other. However, Jean fell at the final fence by losing to John Brown (who was delighted to have accumulated a draw and a win overall), but Sue won her final game to take the trophy and the wine glass. She actually won 7 hoops in two of her games, and 6 in the other when beaten by the clock.
When presenting the winner with the trophy, David Edwards said how he had been impressed by the standard of play and the spirit in which the games were played. This was echoed by various members who had come to watch the games.
Those taking part were Rosemary Saunders-Davies, Fiona Russell, Sue Daw, Cynthia Stuart-Smith, Jean Ford and John Brown. We wish them a long, productive and happy future with the Cornwall Croquet Club.
