Eight members, who have joined the Cornwall Croquet Club this season, assembled, with some reservations, to take part in their first serious competition – ‘New Members’ Day’. However, once the first balls had been struck, reservations were forgotten and the competition for hoops became a reality.
They would each play three, 45-minute games of Golf Croquet in two blocks, with the two block winners competing for the trophy in a final match in front of their peers.
As the final three block games started, there was no outright winner in either block, but referee and organiser, Ron George, did not have to resort to comparing previous results as Rhona Foster and Anne May emerged as undisputed winners at the end of the preliminary rounds.
The final was a little daunting as the two had to play in front of those who had been taking part throughout the day as well as several who had arrived to support the new members. However, they both played well in a hard-fought game, the score of which did not reflect the competition between the two players.
Rhona Foster was the eventual winner and was presented with the trophy by the club President, Howard Rosevear.
The club Chairman, David Edwards, congratulated the two finalists for producing a good game to watch, and wished all the contestants the best of luck in their on-going croquet careers.
