The Fowey Croquet Season kicked off on Thursday, 29 March, 2007. Reg Wapling, helped by David and Barry Edwards and Rosemary Bradshaw, set out the court and in alternating spells of sunshine and dramatic hail storms some short games of Golf croquet were played. They really wished that they had had a camera with them as the hail was thick on the ground for five minutes at a time before it melted. The new lawn mower, much needed, was delivered on Thursday, 5 April. This was tried out and approved by Reg, George and Stephen, and as soon as there is some rain Tim Rhodes will put a second application of lawn sand and loam plus grass seed on to the bare patches then by the summer there should be a good lawn to play on.

Matches

Meanwhile on the 8 April, a glorious Easter Day, an intrepid team of four players, Margaret and Stephen Read, David Edwards and Rosemary Bradshaw travelled to Nailsea in order to inaugurate Fowey into the South West Federation Short Croquet Team Event. This marked the Club's debut into such competitions, and rewardingly, they won all of their matches and were the winners of the 2nd Division. This means that they will be promoted to the 1st Division next year. Well done, we knew that they could do it!

Forthcoming B League matches are as follows:

Fowey vs Torbay (away): Tuesday, 24th April.

Fowey vs Plymouth (home at Porthpean): Monday, 30th April.

Fowey vs Cornwall (away at Porthpean): Monday, 21st May.

Fowey vs Exeter (home at Porthpean): Monday, 4th June.

Fowey vs Budleigh Salterton (away): Tuesday, 3 rd July.

Spectators are very welcome at these matches, but if you are coming in the afternoon, please bring a small contribution for tea and share it with the teams.

Several members have also been playing here in Fowey. The key is obtainable from the hotel's reception, but if you need help please ring Rosemary Bradshaw, tel. 832034, or one of the other Committee members. We also have some coaching leaflets, kindly provided by lan Wilson, and there will be some simple coaching beginning on the 2nd Monday of most months at 1.45 pm for 2.00pm. There will also be preliminary matches between the entrants for both the Association and Golf All England Handicap Championships taking place. The winners will go forward to area finals later on, so Fowey will be truly on the National Croquet map by summer's end.

The Committee would like to thank our 'loyal supporters', your subscriptions have made a big contribution to the cost of the new lawn mower (see below). This mower is easy to handle and should promote a better playing surface. Rosemary Bradshaw.

Now for our social scene.

Members will remember the excellent social programme that was offered last year and a hearty thank you to Janet Howard and Sylvia Anson. Many new ideas are coming into the scene for this year and we welcome Peggy Turpin who will work with Janet as one of our Social Secretaries for 2007/8.

First, a Cream Tea with Strawberries at Myrtle House (Janet Howard's home) will take place on the 18 June at 4.00pm - so there is a chance to play a game of croquet before meeting up with everyone.

A boat trip to Lostwithiel, something new, is also being offered on Wednesday, 1 August, leaving Fowey Town Quay at 6.00pm. Participants can either bring a picnic or order a fish and chip supper (see the attached booking form).

Those who attended the Safari Supper last October will remember the wonderful evening that we all had and a special thank you goes to Janet who worked extremely hard to make this event successful. This idea is being reconsidered - lets hope that it is repeated!

A Christmas Party with 'live' entertainment will take place on the 14 December at the Fowey Hotel.

In the New Year on the 2 Feb, 2008 a Winter Party, by the kind invitation of Mr. and Mrs Howard Rosevear, is planned. This will be a joint event with Cornwall and, hopefully, Fowey will provide the entertainment. We look forward to seeing you at some, or all, of these events.
